:: Cannes, the Mecca of the 7th Art

The first step in traveling on the French Riviera will not be as Cannes, which in May became the world capital of cinema.

Direction the Palais des Festivals. After the traditional red carpet, we find theaters (including the Grand Auditorium) and the scenes of this legendary venue, which hosts the 67th edition of the Festival this year.

It is also the starting point of the tour "Cannes and film: a glamorous tandem", organized by the tourist office (1 h 30). The route takes you 9 steps on the emblematic places of the big screen, with anecdotes and secrets of shooting bonus.

On the Croisette, bordered by pines and palm trees, we advance between sandy beaches, luxury boutiques and luxury hotels, also related to the cinema. In Martinez, the chef at La Palme d'Or (2 Michelin stars) prepares an annual special menu dedicated to the President of the Festival. In Carlton, the suites are named after stars of the 7th Art (Grace Kelly, Sean Connery, Alain Delon, Uma Thurman ...). At the Majestic, finally, the corridors are decorated with portraits of the biggest stars Harcourt.

Without the ability to stay in the Penthouse Majestic (! Charged a whopping € 39,000 a night), you can make a small movie madness: a private screening in one of the 35 seats of the cinema Diane, sipping champagne , before dinner at Fouquet's (all for € 95).

Finally, at the end of the Croisette, the Palm Beach Casino embodies the glamor of the 1940s This is where the final scenes were shot for "Melody in the basement."

:: Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the artists' village

Upon arrival in the small hilltop village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, dominated by a bell, you're in the mood.

Café de la Place, on the large shaded esplanade plane, it is not difficult to imagine Yves Montand, dressed all in white, to the jack with his friend Lino Ventura, watched by Simone Signoret.

It is just opposite, La Colombe d'Or, the golden couple Montand-Signoret had met before getting married at the town hall of Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1951, Paul Roux, the owner of the famous inn, hosted poets and painters (Chagall, Picasso, Léger, Soutine ...) in the 1920s before becoming the friend of movie stars from the 1940s.

At that time, Jacques Prévert moved to the village, his presence helping to attract many directors, including Henri-Georges Clouzot and André Cayatte. He remained there fifteen years, including the resident Miette, today reported a plate.

In 1950-60, the village turns into a real movie set. There, cross the biggest stars of the 7th Art, attracted to the Riviera by Victorine studios in Nice and Cannes.

A themed tour ("Saint-Paul-de-Vence and film") is offered by the tourist office, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of films and personalities related to the village. A good way to explore the charming cobbled medieval streets (it's better to go out of season, to avoid the crowds).

And, if you are an art lover, take the opportunity to go to the Maeght Foundation, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.

Spree :: glamor on the Corniche

Ready for a moment of madness? Adjust your sunglasses, turn on the ignition and hear the engine roar of your convertible, before taking the direction of the Grande Corniche. No, this scene is not pure fiction ...

To discover the French Riviera, driving a vintage car, you just have to rent one from Rent a Classic Car, which has a fine collection. Attention is not given, it takes eg € 189 per day to rent a Lotus Vintage!

The biggest star of the fleet is the Mercedes 190 SL (1956), which was led by Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Yul Brynner, Alfred Hitchcock, Gina Lollobrigida or Ingrid Bergman.

Another jewel of the collection, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider (1963), a bright red, which was the car Marcello Mastroianni in La Dolce Vita (Fellini, 1960) and that of Alain Delon in Melody basement .

With or without a vintage car, go discover the locations of cult films, starting with the three cornices, La Turbie and Eze.

And for those who did not feel like driving, the company Alcyon offers guided tours by car (modern, this time), with driver, on the subject of cinema.

Otherwise, nothing prevents you to roam this part of the Riviera on your own, because the setting is sublime. The French Riviera, with or without star is already a movie!
